OBITUARY - BERNICE M. MINISH
SOUTH DEERFIELD

Bernice M. Minish, 95, of Mountain Road, died Monday, May 28, 2018 at Hospice of the Fisher Home in Amherst. She was born in Danbury, Connecticut on December 11, 1922, to George H. and C. May (Thompson) Capen.

She attended Danbury schools graduating from Danbury High School in 1940. She was a communicant of St. James Episcopal Church. She was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and sang in choirs from the time she was 7 years old. She married and moved to Elberton, Georgia in 1946. While there, she established and directed the Gordon St. Methodist Church choir, bringing the 34 member group to performances on southern gospel radio. When she returned to Connecticut in 1952 she rejoined St. James and became the alto soloist in the late 60's and early 70's. She also sang with Danbury Community Chorus.

She worked for the Barden Corp in Danbury as an inspector for over 27 years. After her retirement in 1985 she moved to Springfield (MA) to be closer to family and subsequently to South Deerfield in 1988. There, she was welcomed by the So. Deerfield Congregational Church and was a member of its congregation and choir for the next 28 years.

Bernice was a talented seamstress and did both simple and complex alterations for many local people. She made Halloween costumes and doll clothes and seasonal decorations for family and friends. She loved to crochet and made many beautiful pieces as gifts and donations. Her artistic talent was evident when she would break out her sketch pad and pencils to draw flowers or copy cartoon characters. She was also skilled with tools, and for much of her life, did all of her own household repairs. She loved shoveling snow and would not be deterred from doing it until well into her 80s. She cherished her independence; loved going out with or having visits from her dear friends, enjoyed traveling on day trips, loved trains, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles & playing word games, and thoroughly enjoyed any opportunity to dine out. She will be remembered with love for her kind and compassionate nature and her wonderful sense of humor.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Foster and son-in-law, John of Sunderland; grandson, Joshua Dawson and his wife Rebecca, and great grandchildren, Sabrina and Brendan Dawson all of Deerfield; granddaughter, Tara Foster of New York; nephews Ross Capen (Celeste) of Conn, Myles Capen (Wilma) of PA, Gerald & Larry Minish of South Carolina; and many loving and supportive friends. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Odell E. Minish (1980); her grandson Eric M. Dawson (2014); and her brother, Charles C. Capen (2015).

Calling hours will be Friday, June 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wrisley Funeral Home, South Deerfield. A Celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 9 at 11:00 at the Hatfield Congregational Church, 41 Main St., Hatfield, MA, Reverend Randy Calvo officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
